Trail of glitter leads to slipper bandits

RICHMOND, Va. - It didn't take long for city police to figure out where
Dorothy's ruby red slippers had gone, and no, it wasn't to Kansas. A pair
of 5-foot Styrofoam slippers which Theatre IV had been using to advertise
its performances of The Wizard of Oz disappeared. The shoes had somehow
been stolen from their home high atop the theater's marquee. But, as it
turned out, Dorothy would have her revenge on the alleged thieves.
''Believe it or not, the detectives found a trail of shoe glitter leading
from the theater to one of the individual's apartments,'' police
spokeswoman Christie Collins said Tuesday. ''Is this Hansel and Gretel or
The Wizard of Oz?'' Three people were charged with grand larceny and
felony vandalism. Unfortunately, Collins said, the slippers are unlikely
to return to their spot on the marquee. ''The shoes had been torn apart
and put in bags,'' she said. ''They may have been trying to get rid of
them.''
